The World of Percussion series was created in 1989 by WMI Founder Robert Browning to celebrate rhythms from around the globe featuring luminaries including Zakir Hussain, Don Cherry, Shankar, Foday Musa Suso, and Adam Rudolph. The series ended in 2009, having presented artists from Brazil, Cuba, Gambia, India, Japan, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and Uzbekistan. In our 40th year, we’re reimagining the series with some of today’s most sought after percussionists including Pedrito Martinez, Cyro Baptista, Kaoru Watanabe, Suphala, Sunny Jain, Glen Velez, Batalá and WoP veteran Adam Rudolph.

The 40TH ANNIVERSARY LEGACY series features artists who have played an integral role in the 40-year history of World Music Institute, have been frequently presented by WMI throughout the years, and have significantly contributed to the organization’s standing in New York’s cultural landscape.

BLOODLINES INTERWOVEN at Big Ears Festival

directed by Kaoru Watanabe

Bloodlines Interwoven begins with a conversation. With a new iteration of the project that Kaoru Watanabe launched in 2024, the 10 musicians he gathered tell stories about their ancestry and upbringing, unpacking the tales that shaped who they have become for one another. They listen and then improvise, letting those shared narratives inform what they’re playing and what they’re hearing. These early impulses guide the development of a concert-length program that explores the traumas, tragedies, and triumphs that shape all of us

FEATURING CYRO BAPTISTA, FAY VICTOR, GAMIN, KWEKU SUMBRY, MAFER BANDOLA, MARIKA HUGHES, SÉAMUS EGAN, SHAHZAD ISMAILY, SUNNY JAIN, AND YUNIYA EDI KWON

Bloodlines Interwoven is a multi-year, multi-venue performance project that brings together artists from a wide range of backgrounds to share their family histories and create new music inspired by those personal narratives. Conceived by artistic director Kaoru Watanabe, the project uses an intensive, collaborative music-making process to explore the richness of our diverse experiences–and uncover the deep connections that bind us together.

The project is supported by the Mellon Foundation and the Baryshnikov Arts Center, and produced by THE OFFICE performing arts + film.
